Sport, Spine & Rehab, of Eliot, Maine is working with coach Ross and the Traip Rangers with the Stop Sports Injuries program. We are the first affiliation in the state and are particularly interested in preventing concussions and knee injuries which have become an epidemic in high school sports. Dr. Cantu, the foremost expert in the field of concussion research, has recommended neck and core strengthening could help prevent concussions. He also recommends that girls, particularly, soccer players strengthen their necks to help avoid concussions. This past spring Dr. Cantu sited that there needed to be a scientific means of measuring neck strength. Sport, Spine & Rehab has the first and only evidence-based means of testing neck and core strength. We use the MedX low back machine to measure core strength and the MCU by BTE for neck strength. Our goal is to test every Ranger and use their strength test as a benchmark for their strength at the beginning of the season and should an injury occur use the test as a tool to know when the athlete can return to play. SSR is working with Purdue University on a study to see what the relationship is between neck and core strength and concussion prevention. We are proud of coach Ross for taking a proactive role in injury prevention. If all coaches took this role our student athletes would be safer in the sports they play. SSR is also working with the Kittery Sharks. Our goal is to have all athletes, coaches and parents Take The Pledge to Stop Sports Injuries. We would like to see the Stop Sports Injuries sticker on every helmet or sports bag of every student athlete in Maine and NH. Could you feature this in the sports section. Testing for neck and core costs $25.00 and we will donate $10.00 back to the schools athletic department.
