Spotted antbirds are found in the subtropical or tropical moist - TopicsExpress

Spotted antbirds are found in the subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama; as well as Colombia and Ecuador. Hylophylax naevioides is listed as least concern and thankfully is thriving very well throughout its range. Although the species population size is decreasing there are no real documented threats associated with the bird. Primary prey includes small spiders, cockroaches, katydids, crickets, centipedes, sowbugs, and moths. Dr Willis notes one instance of an individual unsuccessfully attempting to carry a large lizard twice the length of [the birds] head. Prey length is usually ca 14 mm and rarely over 21 mm. Larger prey items are dissected in a similar manner as large prey taken by Bicolored Antbirds (Gymnopithys leucaspis)... Quantitative analysis In a diet study in central lowland Panama, 7 of 44 (16%) Spotted Antbirds had consumed lizards, whereas 10 of 44 (23%) had consumed frogs (Eleutherodactylus spp.). Petty cool bird :) Credit (Frank Thierfelder)
