The visitors brief spell of pressure was rewarded when Gouffran dispossessed Dembele and played in Remy, who sped away from Michael Dawson, beat Friedel and calmly finished. The home side might have levelled five minutes later when Eriksen curled an inviting delivery across the Newcastle goalmouth, but no Spurs player was on hand to apply a finish. Roberto Soldados header was then tipped over by Krul just short of the half-hour mark before the Dutchman was again alert to deny Eriksen and Paulinho before the break. Krul was again on hand to maintain his sides lead four minutes into the second half, denying Eriksen one-on-one with his left leg, with substitute Sandro driving wide soon after. The Netherlands goalkeeper continued to deny the North Londoners, making a fine double save from Sigurdssons free-kick and then Younes Kabouls follow-up, as Spurs continued to apply pressure. Both Remy and strike partner Shola Ameobi were withdrawn as Pardew looked to shut up shop – a tactic that proved successful as the Magpies denied Villas-Boas’s charges the chance of returning among the UEFA Champions League spots. Tottenham Hotspur head coach Andre Villas-Boas: We gave the first-half advantage to Newcastle but we were very, very unlucky. We had so many good chances; the result was very unfair. Newcastle came in strong and played well first half – they deserved the lead. We did not recognise ourselves; we were not on top of our game, and it was not our better first half. Tim Krul did well today. Last season he had a great game against us as well. He was the inspiration; he made the difference. With a bit more luck we would have found the finishing touch. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: Wow. I think [Tim Krul] is the best goalie in Holland and he proved that today. His performance level has not needed to be high recently as we have not come under that sort of pressure too often, but we did today. Certainly in the second half Tottenham really turned up the heat and he answered almost everything. It was an unbelievable performance. We did similar to what we did when we won against Chelsea. Remy had a great chance before he scored and I was a little bit surprised he did not take that because he really is in great form. But the second one he made no mistake with and it gave us a platform for the win. He has got a silkiness to the way he moves and a nice kind of gait, the way he runs and everything. He really is a classy-looking performer, which is great if you back it up with goals.”
