St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza Oklahoma’s Humanism team, - TopicsExpress

St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza Oklahoma’s Humanism team, FreeOK, has teamed with local businesses and the St. Baldrick’s foundation to orchestrate a charity drive for for childhood cancer research to be held during the Plaza District’s monthly event Plaza Sunday, May 4th, 2014. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research and generates more charitable income for cancer research than even the American Cancer Association. The organization’s signature events ask that fundraising volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with children undergoing treatment. Stylists from Velvet Monkey will be shaving heads for the several willing people from around the community, raising funds for this cause. Honorees for St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza include Davin, a Lewisville, Texas child who lost his battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at age 11, and Daniel, whose rare type of ALL left his family with no other option than experimental treatment until his passing. Daniel’s story touched event coordinator Suzanne Yancey and inspired the creation of this event. Attendees of Plaza Sunday will also have an opportunity to save a life. As part of St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza, the organizers of Swab Squad will be on hand with a pop-up marrow drive to assist the OK Blood Institute in growing the Be The Match marrow registry. As a part of St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza, local musicians Audra Yenny as well as The Black Rollers will perform live music during this event. Orange Rex will be the emcee along with KJ 103 and Brad B. Plaza Sunday and St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza goers can treat themselves to brunch from some of the unique flavors on 16th Street. Try Urban Wineworks with a glass of locally made wine, Saints for a bit of Irish flair with nothing on their brunch menu over $10, or our newest brunch spot, The Mule. Several of the shops are open extended hours, offering unique and local wares. Paint N Cheers will be offering painting instruction in their monthly, “Canvas & Kool-Aid” class. Early risers can enjoy Sunday Celebration at the Parish, childcare provided. Those staying late can munch on some ‘za at Empire Slice House, opening at 4pm or head down to our friends outside of the Plaza to Brass Bell Studios showcasing local artist and Plaza neighbor, Tessa Ravens. You can read more on the honorees of St. Baldrick’s Day on the Plaza, donate, or register as a fundraising volunteer on the St. Baldrick’s website.
