St Bernard of Clairvaux said that there are four steps to the love of God: 1) The first step is that you love yourself. This is natural and right, but if you really love yourself, if it is really love, you cannot contain it all 2) So it overflows to your neighbor, your friend. This also is natural and right, But here too if this is really love, your relationship cannot contain it all 3) And it overflows to God, which,again, is natural and right. But here too if this is really love of God, your relationship with God cannot contain it all 4) And it overflows back to you from your relationship with God.
