St. Luke 8:39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” For decades now I have struggled with – and loved – this story from Luke about the time that Jesus sent a legion of demons into a herd of pigs, thus ruining the local economy of pig farmers and resulting in Jesus being asked to please leave that place and those people. What do we do with a story like that? Well, first we laugh! There is so much about the story that is so funny that all we can do is laugh. I remember when Laura Gerstner was teaching Sunday School, years ago, and she asked me “What the heck is this story all about? What is the lesson to be drawn from it?” And I gave it great thought and I focused all of my Seminary training and Theological wisdom on it and the very best answer I could come up with was “The lesson to be learned is that pigs can’t swim!” But the story has never left me. - Excerpt from sermon 6/23/13
