Starting Ive always heard that the first step is the hardest. That is particularly true in creative endeavors. Getting over the hurdle of I cant do this! or What if I fail? is sometimes so daunting that we give up before we have tried. The paralysis brought on by our fears makes starting a monumental task. In reality, starting is one step no larger than the others, but it appears larger and more ominous the longer we stare at it. If you have ever found yourself paralyzed by those voices in your head, I encourage you just to start. Do ONE thing that gets you on the road to the place you want to be. Sometimes, just defying the odds and DOING something difficult is all the momentum you need to get moving consistently. Other times, each step my be a battle with fear, but look at each one as a victory in and of itself. Scared to death of performing? Do it anyway. No one ever died from a bad performance. Afraid to make that phone call to someone who could help you get ahead in the business? Dial ten numbers and talk. Youve done it before. You can do it again. The principle carries over into life. Learning not to fear starting is often the difference in a life of dreams fulfilled and a life of dreams dying on the vine. Which is scarier? Growing old with bitterness and regret, or taking a chance on something new? The first one terrifies me. The second isnt that frightening in comparison. Start. Write on! Marty Dodson
