Statement from Dr Clive Peedell, co-leader of the National Health Action Party, on government plans to privatise child protection services. (Story here: theguardian/society/2014/may/16/privatise-child-protection-services-department-for-education-proposes) Its disgraceful that this government can even contemplate allowing private companies to make a profit from vulnerable children. The proposed outsourcing and privatisation of child protection services is yet another example of this government’s ideological obsession with dismantling and marketising the entire public sector. The public sector has never been under such threat as now and our NHS in particular is being dismantled and outsourced to private companies at an alarming rate. The risks of market failure are far too high to put our most vulnerable children at risk. These proposals must be quashed and we fully support the views of the co-signatories in today’s Guardian letter that has brought this important issue to public attention.
