Stefano Cucchi was a drug addict who died in prison in Rome in 2009, due to polices beatings and the lack of medical cure. In all these years, the doctors and the policemen involved were accused with enough evidence, but unfortunately they have now been set free of charge. Vice-secretery of the Drug Dept Giovanardi stated that Cucchi died because he was a drug addict, anorexic and HIV positive. Writer Erri de Luca responds to Giovanardi (De Luca, please forgive the inadequate translation): “Those in power declare that the arrested young man named Jesus, son of Joseph, has died because of the holes in his hands and feet, considering that he was a carpenter and dealing with nails he often hurt himself during his work. Because he spoke in public and had the vice of drinking vinegar, because he lost in gambling and his clothes were given to the winners at the end of the game. The contusions in his body are not due to flagellations, but to his falling while walking up Mount Golgotha burdened by inadequate equipment, and the wound in his chest was not made by the policemen’s spear but it was a suicide attempt. The arrested man finally died because he stubbornly stopped breathing despite the good ventilation of the place. A more natural death will happen only to the named Stefano Cucchi, almost the same age as the young man mentioned above.”
