Steve signing in at 7:00 AM. Clear skies with some high cloudiness exiting the area. Temperatures generally in the upper 20s across the 4 county area. Sunny, warmer today with high temperatures reaching the mid 50s. After lows Sunday morning around the freezing mark, well see afternoon highs 10 degrees warmer than today, mid 60s along the I-40 corridor. We should see upper 60s on Monday. A front approaches later in the day on Monday with maybe some rain or drizzle later in the evening on Monday behind the front. Strong high pressure well to our north is likely to trigger a classic cold-air wedge across the area. This means that light rain or drizzle and chilly temperatures could be with us until perhaps Wednesday. Highs Tuesday should be only in the mid 40s. Monday night and Tuesday there is little if any chance of anything other than rain/drizzle but well have to watch Tuesday night. If temperatures trend much colder, we could see some of that rain freeze as it reaches the surface particularly in the higher elevations. The cold air wedge is forecast to break on Wednesday but that may be a little optimistic. Right now it looks like skies should stay on the cloudy side with temperatures rising to the 60° but we may have to revise the temperature forecast downward in future updates. The high to our north looks to be a fast mover but it is never easy to break a classic cold-air damming event here in the Carolinas. I think by Thursday of next week, the wedge should have totally retreated but another approaching front could continue partly to mostly cloudy conditions and another cold air wedge could settle in Friday. Right now were looking at near normal temperatures for late next week, upper 50s to around 60° but that could change, too, depending on the cloud cover and cool air that becomes entrenched in the area.
