Steve signing in at 7:42 AM. Under partly cloudy skies, temperatures range from 50° (Brindletown) to 56° (Hickory) this morning. The back door front is sitting right over top of us along the I-40 corridor this morning. With high pressure building in from the Bahamas and to our southwest, I expect this front is going to retreat northward, probably into Virginia this afternoon. Under sunny skies, well warm back into the upper 80s across the four county area. Winds may not be as much a problem as I thought yesterday, nor will thunderstorm chances. Although well have some instability and shear, a strong cap on the atmosphere will greatly limit any thunderstorm development in our area through tonight and into Wednesday. The back-door front is likely to retreat southward overnight to the South Carolina state line by early Wednesday and some communities especially in Catawba County could see some early morning low clouds and fog. These should burn off as high pressure once again exerts its influence and the front itself mixes out during the day. Expect another warm day, maybe 3 or 4 degrees cooler than today but with mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. With no front to worry about Thursday (and Friday), temperatures under sunny skies could surpass the 90° mark in the western piedmont and foothills, with 80s likely in the higher elevations. Thursday, especially, looks like a pretty hot day along the I-40 corridor, close to zero chances of any rain. By later Friday and Saturday we become increasingly under the influence of a storm and frontal system to our west that will probably stall out over our area in greatly weakened fashion by Sunday. Shower chances increase as the weekend progresses with a few thunderstorms possible by Sunday. At this point I dont expect a lot of rain, more or less, just a nuisance event to mess up our weekend a little. Early next week there is the chance that warm to hot and dry conditions could once again return to our area. Well refine that in later forecasts. For those of you who think you missed Spring this year, I feel your pain.
