Steve signing in at 7:52 AM. Skies are partly to mostly cloudy, mainly debris clouds from a thunderstorm complex that has fallen apart over our area, still going on north of Atlanta GA. Temperatures range from 58° to 62°. Cold front still to our west and north over southeastern KY and eastern middle Tennessee should cross the area later this morning into the early afternoon, taking the clouds with it. We should have a pretty nice day overall with afternoon temperatures reaching 80° or slightly above, gusty westerly winds. Not far to our south, though, say, south of Charlotte, thunderstorms could fire up again over parts of the SC Midlands. Not a concern for us unless the front slows down, then there is the small chance that storms may re-develop closer to us. Instability builds just about everywhere this afternoon but as long as the front is far enough to our south, storm chances will be negligible. Yesterday afternoon and evening, not too far to our north and west over eastern Kentucky and western West Virginia, supercell thunderstorms generated numerous tornado warnings and caused considerable wind damage, some of which could have been tornado damage and someone captured video of at least one of the tornados. This system stayed mainly to our north and weakened as it moved eastward. Thursday looks like the most uneventful day of the next seven. The frontal boundary to our south retreats as a warm front and could potentially be draped over our area most of the weekend. Chances are we should be mostly on the north side of the front but still scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible from Friday afternoon through Sunday. No indication of severe storms during this period with temperatures in the low to mid 70s in the afternoons. Next week a cold front approaches from the west on Tuesday. According to one of the long-range models this could be a pretty strong frontal system with lots of moisture. We should be on the warm side of the front Tuesday. With plenty of moisture, decent instability and wind shear, there is the chance that severe thunderstorms may break out late Tuesday into Wednesday morning. However, being six days away, there is a lot of uncertainty both with respect to the timing and strength of this system. Well update as the event draws near but it is too soon to raise any concern at this point, just to let you know what might happen. Temperatures through next Tuesday should continue in the mid 70s with standing chances of showers and thunderstorms throughout the period.
