Steven R. Gerber’s Spirituals for String Orchestra will be performed by the Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Karen Griebling, Conductor, on Monday, November 24 at 7:30 PM in Reves Recital Hall on the campus of Hendrix College, 1600 Washington Avenue in Conway, Arkansas. This will be part of the Chamber Orchestra’s Thanksgiving Concert. Gerber will be guest composer for the event and will speak about the work. The composer writes about the piece, “Spirituals exists in several versions: string orchestra, clarinet and string quartet, and finally string quartet alone. They are original pieces based on some aspect of the original Negro spirituals - a phrase, a rhythm, a contour, etc.” The piece has been recorded by the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony, Vladimir Lande, conductor for the Arabesque label.
