Stories like Robin Williams serve as a great opportunity to acknowledge that people are hurting in our world. Just because things look good on the outside, doesnt mean that a person could be dying on the inside. Its crucial that we not only pray for one another, but that we listen and provide safe places for people to share their doubts, fears, and anxieties. I found that in the church some of our biggest problems is that we dont always know how to react when someone says, Im not alright. We either blow it off, give a pat answer, or try to fix it. Instead maybe we should just listen and allow people to speak open and freely about their pain without the fear of being judged or condemned or not taken serious. Jesus wants to shine light into the darkness of ones spirit. He wants to bring hope to hopeless, and freedom to those bound by shame and guilt. He invites us to be a part of that light shining into darkness by loving people and extending grace into their world of brokenness. So as you think about Robin Williams and the laughter he brought, lets be mindful of the people around us. You never know who else is ready to give up or checkout. Who knows it maybe even someone who reads this post. If thats you or someone you know, please know that God loves you in your pain and brokenness and wants to help. And if you need someone to listen, just give me a call. Peace my friends.
