Students! Dont miss out on two pop-up classes taught by our very own faculty in Union Square! #ClimateActionWeek USQ Green Market Pop-Up Class FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2014 Urban Green Spaces for Equitable, Livable, and Resilient Cities Led by P. Timon McPhearson, assistant professor of Urban Ecology and Coordinator for Environmental Science, Tishman Environment and Design Center, The New School 10:30A Developing, designing, and retrofitting cities to be more equitable, more resilient to climate change, and in ways that increase livability and the health and well-being of urban residents requires that we take seriously the benefits of urban ecological infrastructure. Urban ecosystems in New York City provide coastal flood protection, stormwater absorption, urban heat island reduction, air pollution removal, and are sites for recreation and relaxation important to the livelihoods of New Yorkers. Incorporating the full value of our urban ecological infrastructure into decision-making is a critical step towards a more sustainable urban future. Fooding the City: Urban Recipes for Climate Action Led by Rositsa Ilieva, Post-Doctoral Fellow with Environmental Studies, Tishman Environment and Design Center, The New School 12:00P Today, the urban food system is not only shaped by, but shapes climate. Can then cities take climate action through food? By drawing on examples from the emerging food planning movement in the Global North, the class will explore the scope for cities to drive food system change to more socially just and environmentally sound normals, from seed to table and back. At the end of the class attendees will receive seasonal recipes kindly provided by the farmers of the Friday Union Square Greenmarket and a map indicating how to reach the stand of the farmer who provided the recipe.
