Students in Dr. Townsends Project Lead the Way Biomedical classes - TopicsExpress

Students in Dr. Townsends Project Lead the Way Biomedical classes got to spend time in a mobile genetics lab yesterday. The Greenwood Genetic Center is based in Greenwood County, SC. They have a full lab and classroom facility there, and the mobile lab travels throughout SC in an effort to engage students in high school. The mobile science laboratory allows students to engage in scenarios where they become the genetic physician and researcher. They learn about genetic traits and disorders, understand the lab techniques used in making a diagnosis. The students participated in Mystery of the Crooked Cell where they tested human hemoglobin to determine if their patients have sickle cell disease; Microarray, an simulated microarray test was performed to evaluate gene expression, and Name that Disorder, where students performed biochemical tests and used patient information to diagnose a genetic disorder.
