Summer research opportunity - deadline next week, see contact below as I am just passing this along. Would you like to study the evolution of the Australian Hammer orchids this summer? CSIRO is currently inviting applications for their prestigious undergraduate vacation scholarships to be carried out at one of CSIRO’s national research collections. As part of this program, the Australian Tropical Herbarium in Cairns, tropical north Queensland, offers the exciting opportunity to carry out a research project on the Australian Hammer orchids and relatives. Applications close on the 14th of September 2014. As the successful candidate you will reconstruct a multi-locus molecular phylogeny of the Hammer orchids (Drakaeinae) to obtain insights into their evolutionary diversification and evolution in space and time. You will be trained in relevant lab techniques including extracting DNA, and generating DNA sequence data, and will learn to reconstruct phylogenetic trees from these molecular data. The CSIRO scholarship program will run from the 1st of Dec. 2014 until the 6 of Feb. 2015 and has a broad variety of collection-based projects on offer. Interested?
