Sunday August 3, 2014 Dead In Sin Or To Sin? Ephesians 2:3-9 (NIV) All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of His great love for us, God, Who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions; it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith; and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast. There are only two category of people in this world as concerns sin. Either we are dead IN sin or dead TO sin; there is no in between. Every human being born into this world is dead in sin (Psalm 51:5). It is only when we recognize our sinfulness and receive Gods saving grace through faith in Jesus Christ that we become dead to sin (Romans 6:2). Without Christ, we all have a sinful nature; are lost in sin and cannot save ourselves. Even though people who have not given their lives to Christ do good things; are moral, kind and law-abiding, on Gods absolute scale, no one is good enough to earn salvation (you were dead in your transgressions and sins v.1). Only through being united with Christs perfect life can we become good in Gods sight, and dead To sin. We become Christians through Gods unmerited grace, not as the result of any effort, ability, intelligent choice, or act of service on our part. However, out of gratitude for this free gift, we will seek to help and serve others with kindness, love, and gentleness, and not merely to please ourselves. While no action or work we do can help us obtain salvation, Gods intention is that our salvation will result in acts of service. We are not saved merely for our own benefit but to serve Christ and build up the church (v.12). May God help us to use our state of being dead to sin to serve others and lead them from being dead in sin to Christ. Amen. Be Blessed.
