Survival in a Changing World By Akyala Ishaku. Our world is evolving more rapidly than anyone can imagine. We are confronted with new challenges each day that either require new survival techniques or new equipment to solve them. We have seen massive changes in technology, social media, politics, health, environment etc. in such a short time. Some of these changes, like Ebola met the world unprepared and has claimed thousands of lives. I wish to base this article on changes in the job market. When we grew up, we were taught that becoming a graduate was a meal ticket. Surprisingly, after obtaining those good degrees, most of us have remained unemployed for years. Even those gainfully employed are threatened by the current technological advancements. In the developed world for instance, brilliant and highly skilled employees are losing their jobs to machines (robots). They are left to scramble for crumbs with the unskilled labourers at the bottom of the labor market. The situation is more pathetic in the developing world where even the unskilled labor is scarcely available for those willing to do them. Millions of able-bodied young people wander the streets of the world every day in search for just a meal. As a biologist, I know that species with a more robust genomic mechanism for survival are selected over the weaker ones under harsh conditions. To survive under the current conditions, we need to become more creative and innovative. We need to be more skill-oriented and not certificate-based. This is a season, we need to convert our knowledge to products that can be traded. In the near future, most of the traditional jobs will be faced out. The careers of the future will require skills in information technology, biotechnology, space technology, renewable energy and the environment. Research in the biological sciences will be molecular and sub-atomic in the physical sciences. Man’s destination will be to space. We need to think deeply and follow the trend closely so as to acquire the skills that will be relevant in the near future. Otherwise, the daybreak might meet us dancing naked in the square.
