Syrian soldiers have entered eastern districts of the town of Yabroud, a rebel bastion north of Damascus near the Lebanese border, human rights activists said March 15, Daily Star and Al Jazeera reported, citing the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen TV. Fighting has been ongoing between government troops and Hezbollah militants on one side and rebels with Jabhat al-Nusra on the other. Activists with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the government was shelling certain districts with improvised barrel bombs. Seizing Yabroud would allow the Syrian government to cut key rebel supply lines to Lebanon, since the town is located near routes linking Damascus to Aleppo and the Mediterranean coast.
