T A ORJI Speaks for Ogah; Why Abians Will Rejoice When Ogah Becomes Governor — June 12, 2014 As the race to the Abia State Government house is gathering momentum, many people of divergent motives are signifying interest to become governor. Some are serious contenders, while some are just mere pretenders, with intention to spoil chances for possible winners. Dr. Uche Ogah, the president of Master Energy Oil and Gas, is a strong and serious contender for the position. Abians know he has impeccable credentials. And they trust him, also. When he said he has been a politician and a loyal party member of the Peoples Democratic Party in a recent interview with some selected journalists in Abuja, many Abians were delighted, grateful for his showing interest in becoming governor. When he said he has been consulting widely to participate greatly in the politics of the state, many Abians rejoiced because they know if he finally gets the ticket and wins, he will turn around the fortune of the state. He has been doing that as a private citizen with his many companies. According to some people who want to contest, Uche is a man whose genius lies in his commitment to God and service to humanity. As a unique person in the political history of the state, Uche has invented an entirely new technique for the liberation struggle of the oppressed people and carried it out with great energy and devotion. In the last few months people from different zones of the state have been urging him to come out and contest, groups from all parts of the state have visited his country home, Uturu, in Isiukwuato Local Government area. People have come all the way from Umuahia, Aba, Bende and, in fact, from the three senatorial zones in the state and visited him and urged him to contest. They believe that if the banker-turned-business magnate becomes the governor of the state, Abia will rejoice and smile, because he has given hope to the hopeless in the state, even as a private citizen. Over 4,000 Abian indigent students currently enjoy his magnanimity as they are beneficiaries of scholarships endowed by him in various institutions across the country. According to Uche, there is no need of claiming to be giving scholarship to people when they need money for books and biros. The N200, 000 was to enable them concentrate on their studies, without disturbance. One of the interesting things about this scholarship is that it is purely designed to favour the very poor and they constitute 40 percent of the beneficiaries while the remaining 60 percent was given purely on merit. The programme which started in Abia North Senatorial zone as part of his human capital development has extended to all other parts of the state. Gifted but poor students now have access to the scholarship, thanks to the man who wants to be governor of the state. The candidate insists that investing on human capital, the state will have a developmental plan, which can go on for years. What Abia State people need today is a man who has passion for the people and development of the state not zoning of the position to a particular senatorial zone. The position of governor should be left open for the people of the state to make rather than narrowing it down to a particular zone. The Abia deed of equity has taken over the state as some people have been canvassing that people from a particular area in the state be excluded from contesting for the prestigious position. Abia equity was never applied in the selection process of the present governor. Can we say the lexicon was created for purpose of excluding people with zeal to turn the state around for good from contesting for the position, giving that over the years Abia State has not been lucky to produce any action governor? Abia State has never produced any governor on the same deed of equity being canvassed by some people now. When the former governor, Dr. Orji Kalu, was contesting as the number one citizen in the state, people from the three senatorial zones contested along with him. It was not ceded to the zone where he came from. The argument that the governorship slot be zoned to the people of Ngwa is uncalled for now, since such practice of zoning has not been recorded in the history of the state, especially through the current democratic experiment. Today, what the state needs is a man with the spirit of God to administer the affairs of the state. The state needs a man of the caliber of Uche Ogah who has demonstrated the spirit of commitment to leap frog the state to an enviable position in the country. The state has the material resources to be one of the best in the country but still remains one of the most backward states in the country. This is why Abian’s preference should go to Uche Ogah.
