TEAM PREVIEW... As we prepare for the season to tip-off on Friday, lets take a look at the 2013-14 Reading High Red Knights basketball team. This team has an interesting blend of experience and youth. Overall the Red Knights have more depth and size than last season, even though they still lack the dominant 67 type of player that some other schools possess. Look for the athletic Red Knights to play good team ball on the offensive end, and to play tougher defense as Coach Perez stresses guarding the paint. Scoring punch will come from 61 Sr. Meme Burdine, the returning leading scorer who brings a scorers mentality to the floor. Sr. Gil Benz, who has an uncanny ability to get to the hoop for a player who is 60, can score in bunches. Gil is still recovering from a preseason illness and will have his minutes limited in the early part of the season. 63 Jr. Tyree Gibson is being counted upon to rebound and score from his front court position. Tyree can step out and hit a 3-pointer as well as mix it up under the boards. Sr. Isael Abreu brings his all-around game to the floor. At 64 Isael can defend with his long arms as well as put up points from anywhere on the floor. Isael will also make some very nice passes to open teammates. Khary Mauras (So. 511) is a true point guard who will drive to the basket and distribute the ball. Khary is also an outstanding defender. 62 Fr. Lonnie Walkers debut is being highly anticipated. Lonnie has been named by at least one national evaluation service as one of the top 150 incoming freshman in the country. Lonnie will bring his athletic and smooth game to the mix. It will be exciting to watch his game grow as he gains experience. Jr.s Raul Barbosa (64) and Justin Kellman (65) will give the Red Knights some size in the paint when called upon. Sr. Julius Young-Trappe (60) will add toughness and experience to the front court while his brother, Sterling Young-Trappe (Jr. 61), returns to provide depth and leadership at guard. Francisco Reyes (Sr. 59) will also add depth and experience to the guard rotation. Rounding out the roster will be defensive specialist Jesse Justice (Sr. 511), guard Sergio Afre (Jr. 59) who transfered from Berks Catholic, and forward Dante Owens (Jr. 62). The pieces are in place for an exciting season!
