THE ASBESTOS ALTERNATIVE WAS TOO EXPENSIVE!!! PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene was discovered by accident on April 6, 1938 by Dr. Roy Plunkett at the DuPont research laboratories (Jackson Laboratory in New Jersey). Plunkett was working with gases related to Freon® refrigerants when upon checking a frozen, compressed sample of tetrafluoroethylene, he and his associates discovered that the sample had polymerized spontaneously into a white, waxy solid to form polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE.... With further experimentation.... the product could then be saturated into rope or other lagging materials, suitable for insulation purposes in ships.....PTFE cost more than asbestos based lagging... BUT.. was inert and completely safe!!!...obviously the powers that be opted for the far more lethal but cheaper ASBESTOS product as huge deposits of asbestos could be mined and processed to make enormous profits for callous uncaring Defence Contractors and their culpable Governmental overlords!!
