THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRAMA AND COMEDY IS THAT YOU CAN CHEAT IN DRAMA... In drama, the PLOT is king. If an actor is lightly off their game, a bit in their head, or delivers the dialogue a shade strangely...they can sometimes get away with it, because the audience is too busy trying to work out the narrative to notice. Its not good acting. Its not visceral, exciting acting. But it can slip by. In comedy, the JOKE is king. If an actor is slightly off, a bit in their head, or delivers the dialogue a shade strangely...no one laughs. The dramatic actor needs to be Spontaneous. Surprising. In the moment. The comic actor needs to deliver the math of a joke, the construction of a line, and deliver it exactly with the right inflection and the right timing...AND be spontaneous, surprising, and in the moment. DRAMATIC ACTORS NEED TO STUDY COMEDY...the rules of comedy apply to all scenes. The rule of threes. The hard-switch (180 degree turn). The play-against. Melody. Timing. Dramatic directors will often use the same principals. And when you can deliver HONEST, REAL, FULL character work that is both STRUCTURALLY funny and SURPRISING...you can do anything as an actor. Study comedy. actorsfoundry/sitcom-intensive/
