THE END OF THE PORICINI SEASON - IN SOUTH AFRICA The season on that side of the globe is opposite of ours, it goes from January to August. It used to be a good commerical activity, but now it turns to be more recreational. South Africans have only recently started mushroom hunting. In the past, the people foraging in Cape Town’s forests such as Newlands, Tokai and Cecilia were invariably Italian and German residents, sometimes Polish or Russian. Mycological autodidact Gary Goldman hopes to start a South African revolution, waking locals up to the extraordinary variety of edible mushrooms on their doorstep, mostly free for the taking. He found one weighing 1.6kg and has picked as much as 50kg of porcini in just one morning. He has eaten some 23 local species. Goldman says residents of the Western Cape are especially lucky as there are no flies that are specifically drawn to mushrooms, unlike in the Americas, where by 11am the forest mushrooms nearly all have maggots laid in them.
