THE GIFT OF THE PRESENT! Matthew 6:34 (The Message Bible), - TopicsExpress

THE GIFT OF THE PRESENT! Matthew 6:34 (The Message Bible), “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” A man was being chased by a ferocious tiger. He ran until he came to a sheer cliff. As the tiger came bearing down on him, he grabbed a rope hanging over the cliff and climbed down out of the tiger’s reach. The man looked up and saw the tiger leering at him, waiting to devour him. Then he looked down below the cliff only to see a deadly drop of over 500 feet to the jagged rocks below. Looking up again, he noticed two mice that had came out of a crevasse and had begun chewing the rope. What should he do? The tiger above, the rocks below, and the rope about to break. Just then he saw a bright red strawberry growing out of the side of the cliff in front of him. He plucked the strawberry and popped it into his mouth. The juices of the strawberry were so sweet that as he ate he could hardly contain himself. “Delicious, that’s the best strawberry I ever tasted,” he exclaimed. Had the man been preoccupied with the tiger (the past) or preoccupied with the future (the rocks below), he would never have enjoyed the strawberry - the gift of the present. Our text today reminds us not to become overtly anxious about what may or may not happen tomorrow; but focus, instead, on the gift of the present. The principle here certainly does not advocate one living haphazardly or adopting a laissez-faire disposition, but rather appreciate today as God has created it to be enjoyed. No matter what challenges lie ahead for you this week or this month, do not be distracted by things over which you have no control. Leave tomorrow in the hands of the One who has already been there, and has tomorrow well under His control; and, as well, has created for you to enjoy, the sweet precious gift of this new day.
