THE GRAND OLD DAME of Portland hotels. Much credit should go - TopicsExpress

THE GRAND OLD DAME of Portland hotels. Much credit should go to the Hunt and McIntyre clans for their care and gentle refurbishment over the years, and the inclusion of very expensive fire protection systems. There was another public house (hotel/pub) across the road where Whats Inn Decore Shoppe is now. The Portland Bay Hotel. Then is was a vacant lot with an advertising sign for Yankee Doodle cigarettes and the corner became known by that name. A lot of people have drunk at the Macs and a lot have started or ended careers there. My late brother Barrie (Baz) was a deckhand on the Gail Jeanette and other boats; and also a cook cum chef at the Macs. His specialty, a seafood platter featuring half a crayfish, among other goodies, made the Good Food Guide of The Age column I recall. I worked the door during live shows including Frank Traynors Jazz Preachers, Redgum :) Dutch Tilders and the 80s Portland Folk and Blues Festival. I was 16. The Macs was also headquarters of the Portland World Championship Rocksitters Club (we beat Darwin NT). 1980. This lithograph [top] was dated 1870.
