THE PRINCE OF WALES WILL VISIT SUNDERLAND, TUESDAY 20TH JANUARY 2015 Engagement 1: The Prince of Wales will visit the Nissan UK car plant to learn about the production of electric vehicles and to see how Nissan is creating career opportunities for young people at their Global Training Centre, Washington Road, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Background: Nissan has been the UKs largest car manufacturer for 16 years and its largest car exporter for 14 years. The Sunderland plant built its first car in 1986. Since then, production has reached nearly 8 million units and the plant currently employs more than 6,700 people from the local area and invests significantly in training, education and apprenticeships. Nissan prides itself on its green credentials and is the only company in the UK to produce electric cars for the mass market. The Prince of Wales will walk the production line where LEAF cars and other vehicles are being assembled with demonstrations from Nissan staff and apprentices. His Royal Highness will then visit the Global Training Centre where children from Gillis Lane Primary School in Sunderland and St Cuthberts in Newcastle and the Venerable Bede, Sunderland will be taking part in education activities. The Industrial Cadets (a programme inspired by HRH) will also be doing an activity. Prior to departure, The Prince will unveil a plaque to mark the visit. Engagement 2: The Prince of Wales, Patron, Step Up To Serve, will see the work of the National Citizen Service at Bethany City Church, Bede Tower, Burdon Road, Sunderland. Background: In November 2013, The Prince of Wales launched Step Up To Serve and the #iwill campaign to increase the number of young people involved in social action (volunteering, fundraising and campaigning). He called on community groups, corporate organisations, the education sector and members of the public to create more opportunities for young people to ‘take part’. The National Citizen Service (NCS) pledged that one million young people will have completed their programme by 2020. The Prince of Wales will see a series of activities involving NCS graduates alongside staff, members of the local community and the boxing champion and Olympic Medallist, Amir Khan. This will include a Dragons Den style pitch for graduates to secure funding for a community project with Amir Khan sitting on the panel as a Dragon; a brainstorm for Social Action Day which takes place on March 7th; a technology lesson for the elderly where Amir Khan will join NCS graduates in demonstrating how to send a tweet and a lunch reception hosted by NCS young people for Bethany City Churchs weekly pensioners lunch club.
