THE STATE OF AWO HALL At this point in time we need not to bore - TopicsExpress

THE STATE OF AWO HALL At this point in time we need not to bore ourselves with unnecessary rhetoric about the inaction of the management which is now beyond the pale as far as Uites are concerned. I will try as much as possible to be more laconic and straightforward but if am not, I hereby tender my apologies in advance because a lot of germane issues have to be addressed. Student will recall that the April 22nd, 2012 protest against the epileptic and erratic power on campus has sprouted in this new session. The management promised to restore power before resumption for new session through the Director of Works and Maintenance. The above excerpt is highly dolorous and embarrassing, as their almost 2 months could not proffer any lasting panacea to the epileptic power supply especially at Awo hall and Idia hall. Perhaps, we should wait for another 2 years or more before we react or address the boiling issue of our union. I would not also be surprised because, we are not oblivious of their dubious plans which are to use the Department of Works and Maintenance and the SDC to accumulate wealth and to execute the anti-students policies of its mistress and master at the detriment of the students which is evidence in the ZIK HALL 9 saga. This is no moment for neither any grandiloquent rhetorical nor any boisterous philosophical expostulations. Rather, this is the moment for realistic, practical analysis of our situation, which I see as a situational dilemma. The University sent students out of all halls of residence about two months ago where students have to pay #2000 to get accommodation at Mellanby Hall which many students refer to as U.I Hotel. Sincerely yours, up till now the various developmental projects that should be in place before resumption is not visible perhaps they could explain to the students why they are not yet put in place? As the University resumes on June 2, it is pathetic that since resumption, Obafemi Awolowo Residence do not have power supply, we are calling on the appropriate authority to help proffer a lasting solution to Awo hall problem as most freshers are highly disappointed with the way they were being welcomed into the hall. WAY FORWARD I strongly opine that a step to the panaceas for this present challenge is: a students general gathering should be summoned for the students to deliberate the fate of their hall and noting that it is a fallacious statement from any quarters that the hall is far from the administrative environment. All halls as far as University of Ibadan is concerned paid the same amount for accommodation and the long marginalization of Awo hall should be abrogated. Morealso, the state of the University as regard power and water should be critically addressed. On this note, I leave you with the words of James Baldwin There is never a time in the future in which we can work out salvation, the challenge is in the moment, the time is always now. Regards from yours sincerely Olawuni...Mustapha AMANDLA AWETU.......... NOTHING SHALL DISCOURAGE US. STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF YOU ARE STANDING ALONE.
