THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR A MONDAY 27/10/2014 FIRST READING “Walk in love, as Christ loved us.” A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 4:32-5:8 Brethren: Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, AS God in Christ forgave you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not associate with them. For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R: Let us be imitators of God, as beloved children. Blessed indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the path with sinners, nor abides in the company of scorners, but whose delight is the law of the Lord, and who ponders his law day and night. R. He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper. R. Not so are the wicked, nor so! For they, like winnowed chaff, shall be driven away by the wind. For the Lord knows the way of the just, but the way of the wicked will perish. R. ALLELUIA V: Alleluia R: Alleluia V: Your word, O Lord, is truth; sanctify us in the truth. R: Alleluia GOSPEL “Ought not this daughter of Abraham be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke At that time: Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and he healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. The Gospel of the Lord. TUESDAY 28/10/2014 SS SIMON & JUDE, APP(FEAST) FIRST READING “Built upon the foundation of the apostles.” A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 2:19-22 Brethren: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R: Their sound goes forth through all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands. Day unto day conveys but the message, and night unto night imparts the knowledge. R. No speech, no word, whose voice goes unheeded; their sound goes forth through all the earth, their message to the utmost bounds of the world. R. ALLELUIA V: Alleluia R: Alleluia V: We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as the Lord; the glorious band of apostles sings your praise, O Lord! R: Alleluia GOSPEL “He chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles.” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 6:12-19 In these days Jesus went out into the hills to pray; and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles; Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alphaeus and Simon who was called the Zealot and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all. The Gospel of the Lord. WEDNESDAY 29/10/2014 FIRST READING “Not as men-pleasers, but as servants of Christ.” A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 6:1-9 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise). “that it may be well with you and that you may live ling on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, be obedient to those who are your earthly masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart as to Christ; not in the way of eye-service, as men-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that whatever good any one does, he will receive the same again from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. Masters, do the same to them, and forbear threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R:The Lord is faithful in all his words. All your works shall thank you, O Lord, and all your faithful ones bless you. They shall speak of the glory of your reign, and declare your mighty deeds. R. They shall make known your might to the children of men, and the glorious splendor of your reign. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; your rule endures for all generations. R. The Lord is faithful in all his words, and holy in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall, and raises up all who are bowed down. R. ALLELUIA V: Alleluia R: Alleluia V: God has called us through the Gospel, to obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. R: Alleluia. GOSPEL “Men will come from east and west and sit at table in the kingdom of God.” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 13:22-30 At that time: Jesus went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. And some one said to him, ‘Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ “He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ “Then you will begin to say, ‘we ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ “But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!’ There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” The Gospel of the Lord. THURSDAY 30/10/2014 FIRST READING “Take the whole armour of God that you may be able, having done all, to stand.” A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 6:10-20 Finally, brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having fastened the belt of truth around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the Evil One. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints and also for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R: Blest be the Lord, my rock! Blest be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, who prepares my fingers for war. R. He is my merciful love, my fortress; he is my stronghold, my savior, my shield in whom I take refuge. He brings peoples under my rule. R. To you, O God, will I sing a new song; I will play on the ten-stringed harp to you who give kings their victory, who set David your servant free from the evil sword. R. ALLELUIA V: Alleluia R: Alleluia V: Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord; peace on earth and glory in the highest. R: Alleluia GOSPEL “It cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 13:31-35 On that day some Pharisees came, and said to Jesus, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” And he said to them, “Go and tell that Fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” The Gospel of the Lord. FRIDAY 31/10/2014 FIRST READING “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” The beginning of the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians 1:1-11 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus. To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R: Great are the works of the Lord. I will praise the Lord with all my heart, in the meeting of the just and all assembly. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who delight in them. R. Majestic and glorious his work; his justice stands firm forever. He has given us a memorial of his wonders. The Lord is gracious and merciful. R. He gives food to those who fear him; keeps his covenant ever in mind. His mighty works he has shown to his people by giving them the heritage of nations. R. ALLELUIA V: Alleluia R: Alleluia V: My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me. R: Alleluia GOSPEL “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 14:1-6 One Sabbath when Jesus went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they were silent. Then he took him and healed him, and let him go. And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” And they could not reply to this. The Gospel of the Lord. SATURDAY 01/11/2014 ALL SAINTS FIRST READING “I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues.” A reading from the Book of Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 I, John saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads.” And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel. After this I looked and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thankgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM R: These are the people who seek your face, O Lord. The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and all who dwell in it. It is he who set it on the seas; on the rivers he made it firm. R. Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The clean of hands and pure of heart, whose soul is not set on vain things. R.
