THIS DAY IN HISTORY: Good Housekeeping magazine was first published in 1885. In 1900, the magazine developed the Good Housekeeping Experiment Station to test and evaluate goods for the benefit of the magazines readers. Products that passed the magazines standards were given the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Before any regulatory or consumer protection agencies, this was an important public service, and its tests raised concerns about smoking, overeating and preservatives long before anyone else.
