THROWBACK SUNDAY is yet here for another heart warming memory!! The 1992 World Cup Final and the decision Imran had to make. Pakistan setting a target of 250, and after early debacles, England looked better with Lamb and Fairbrother at the crease. It was Imran who made the call. He was at mid off and he called me from third man saying that you will bowl one over from this end and see if the ball is reversing. As he handed me the ball, I bowled the first two balls from over the wicket to loosen fairbrother up and think of giving him the single so that I can come round the wicket to Lamb. Fairbrother had dug out the first two balls well and it was than I gave him an inswinging yorker on the third which he played well not to get out. And than suddenly it happened and he took a single on the fourth and thats where Imran looked at me and we had an eye to eye contact. Its where I realized that he wanted me to come round the wicket to Lamb. While running for my fifth ball, I thought I would first try to bowl and out swing and pitch the ball outside off stump like Aaqib. But at my last steps before I bowled I decided to pitch it closer to the stumps and cut it away and it happened. The ball to Lewis was a big inswinger which I was not expecting it to happen that much. I am glad I did this and I am glad Imran was right next to me always when I was bowling Wasim Akram “The one player who really stood out for me was Wasim Akram. It was in that tournament that we realised just what a special talent he was and how much trouble he was going to give us and the rest of the world in the years to come.
