THROWBACK THURSDAY ~ Dec. 2007 ~ Carl took me to New York City for our 37th anniversary. We had a wonderful time Christmas shopping, going to shows, eating out and touring the city. Carl had not been to NYC since he was 3 yrs. old. He came from Europe on a ship and the first thing that he remembered about America was seeing the Statue of Liberty. He was the first German child to be adopted after World War 2. He was born in a bomb shelter and his mom, Heurta, pushed him in a baby buggy from Berlin to Bavaria after the war. Her husband was killed in the war, her home was destroyed and she had 3 children and needed a job and got one working as a maid for U.S. Air Force Col. Van Haggard and his wife. Huerta put the two older children in an orphans home and the Haggards adopted Carl and brought him back to America for his health and for a better life. They moved to Texas and Carl did not see his mother again till after we married and I invited her to come visit us in Paris, Texas. His sister died at a young age but his brother, Manfred, lives in Australia and has been to see us here in Paris several times. Carl learned the Bible from his grandparents. They had a tremendous influence on his life and they are one of the reasons that Carl became a Bible teacher and preacher. I have always felt that I was an answer to his grandmothers prayers.
