Adapted to the northeastern of Brazil of the 20s and shot in Ibotirama (BA), the film chronicles the rivalry between two local families whose members vow vengeance and catch duels that are perpetuated over generations. Tonio (Rodrigo Santoro), the middle son of the Breves family, is driven by her father (José Dumont) to avenge the death of his older brother, the victim of an ancient struggle between families over land. If fulfill its mission, Tonio know that his life will be broken into two: the 20 years he has lived and the little time left to live. The lack of perspective is changed with the passage of circus performers who give a gift book to the boy. The love, fantasy and the desire to discover new worlds (the sea, mainly) enter into the boys thoughts, who begins to question the logic of violence and tradition. O filme foi inspirado no livro homônimo do escritor albanês Ismail Kadare. Adaptado para o sertão nordestino dos anos 20 e rodado em Ibotirama (BA), o filme narra a rivalidade entre duas famílias locais cujos membros juram vingança e travam duelos que se perpetuam ao longo de gerações. Tonho (Rodrigo Santoro), filho do meio da família Breves, é impelido pelo pai (José Dumont) a vingar a morte do seu irmão mais velho, vítima de uma luta ancestral entre famílias pela posse da terra. Se cumprir sua missão, Tonho sabe que sua vida ficará partida em dois: os 20 anos que ele já viveu e o pouco tempo que lhe resta para viver. Ele será, então, perseguido por um membro da família rival, como dita o código da vingança da região. Angustiado pela perspectiva da morte e instigado por seu irmão menor, começa a questionar a lógica da violência e da tradição. A falta de perspectivas é alterada com a passagem de artistas circenses que presenteiam o menino com um livro. A fantasia e o desejo de conhecer novos mundos (o mar, principalmente) entram de vez na cabeça do jovem, que mesmo sem saber ler imagina as histórias sugeridas nas ilustrações. Apaixonado por Clara e jurado de morte pelos Ferreira, já não vê mais sentido no que o rigoroso pai chama de honra da família, pensando em fugir com o circo.
