TODAY, 25 years ago: On 9 November 1989, East Germanys Communist rulers gave permission for its gates to be opened after hundreds of people converged on crossing points of the border that separated Western from Eastern Germany. This iconic day symbolised the end of both the Berlin Wall and the Cold War which, for nearly three decades, had kept East and West Berliners apart.
