STRONGER AGREEMENTS BETWEEN CHINA AND SA On President Zuma’s official state trip to The People’s Republic of China a number of strategic agreements were signed. They are aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and trade ties. One such agreement was a five to ten year strategic programme on co-operation including “political mutual trust and strategic co-ordination”. Zuma said: “We will also look at ways of enhancing co-operation in various sectors such as finance, the environment including co-operation in ocean economy, trade and investment, as well as transport and agriculture. AUSTRALIA RELEASES 100 CHILDREN FROM DETENTION CENTRE A new deal was struck with independent senators to grant asylum seekers a temporary visa that will allow them to stay in Australia and work until it is deemed safe to return them to their countries.The deal also ensures that the asylum seekers can’t settle in Australia permanently. 100 Children who were held in a detention centre, some of them living there for 15 months, were released based on this new deal. As part of the deal Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, also promised to increase annual refugee intake by 7,500 people. NOBEL PRIZE SOLD FOR $4.7 MILLION Gold Medalist James Watson sold his prize , which he won in 1962 for the discovery of the structure of DNA, sold his valuable possession for $4.7 million on auction. It’s the first Nobel Prize offered to be auctioned by a living Nobel prize winner. James said parts of the proceeds will be donated to University of Chicago, Clare College Cambridge, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Long Island Land Trust and other charities. The Nobel Prize which was sold last year reached $2.2 million.
