TOTD: God didnt make me like that ... Where when a situation calls for me to help or intervene I just turn my head and walk away ... No, Im sorry Im just not made that way ... Where if you see someone in trouble, you figure thats their problem and you keep going ... no, Im not made that way ... Some will say you placed your life on the line for something others seem invaluable and I say our Freedom and our Citizenship of helping our neighbor is more valuable ... Sure there is a time you may run or theres a time you may fight but instinct will take over and your gut feeling will drive your character to do what you feel is right ... But every one of us are different in some way ... but Im just not one that can turn my head and go on my way ... so heres an old story some may remember but many probably dont even know about .... In 89 I had left work and was driving home on CR 523 headed north to Angleton from Oyster Creek Site at Dow ... I had slowed down as I approached an icy bridge and immediately realized a tragic wreck had occurred with an 18 wheeler crushing a car that had swerved into its lane and the truck driver had tried to miss it but went over the handrail and the truck was hanging from the Bastrop Bayou bridge ... The car was flattened and I just knew the driver was dead ...I immediately stopped ran to the house next to the bridge and woke the owners up hollering at them to call 911 (this was before cell phone) and it was about 6am on a Saturday morning with freezing weather around 14 degrees and ice everywhere)... So I ran back to the bridge and I could hear a mans voice crying for help ... I saw him in the water hanging onto a piling out in the middle of the Bayou ...I started trying to calm him by talking to him from shore and realized he was scared and could not swim, and the truck was above him hanging on the piling about 15 foot away, so I started taking my jacket off and turned around an old man from Angleton Mr. Fletcher had showed up and was up at the top of the embankment and I turned and handed him my billfold and jacket and he said Son dont let him drown you and I told him that wasnt happening but if it did my license was in my billfold and just call my house ... I turned to the driver and kept talking to him to calm him down as I waded into the water ... I swam out to the bridge pilings away from him and made eye contact with him and told him face to face we were going to swim to shore and he was not going to drown me ... I got my arm around him and we went to shore and at the shoreline he broke down crying and thanking me and we made it up the embankment and I told Mr. Fletcher to give him my jacket and take him to the hospital as no ambulance had shown up yet ... the driver was bleeding and in shock from falling into the water from the hanging truck and couldnt swim ... Nobody was on the scene yet because the roads were so bad and I had asked Mr Fletcher if he had checked the car and he said it looked bad so I bent down to look in and a girl was alive but injured and had survived the big truck crushing her car but was tangled in the seatbelt and the car was smoking so I wanted to get her out in case it caught on fire ... The man from the house was at the bridge with me by this time and I hollered for him to get a knife ... I needed it to cut the seatbelt off of her as I calmed her down telling her she was going to be ok ... Certainly not knowing for sure but Mr Fletcher and the driver were still on the scene and he gave my jacket back and billfold and told me He aint never seen nothing like this before! ... And he was off to the hospital ... I got the seatbelt cut and relieved the pressure off of the girl in the car ... My biggest concern was having my legs ran over as I laid down on the roadway to get into the car, several vehicles just kept going by the scene not stopping to help or anything and I was so glad to see Jerry Anderson from the Sheriff department arrive as he was the first officer on the scene and then an ambulance showed up and they took over thanking me for what i had done to help ... The man from the house hugged me and told me thank you for what I had done also and I loaded up soaking wet in my truck and drove on home from what had been a long night at work but an even more eventful morning drive home ... I walked in the house to try and explain to Shay what had just transpired and I hugged her then I went to our girls room and hugged both of them as they laid asleep and with tears in my eyes knowing they were safe and only babys at the time, I was just so grateful for my life and being able to hopefully help others go home to their Family ... No Im just not made that way and I know there are many others wired like me and I can only hope and pray that if my Family or Friends are in need of help they are on the scene to help ... Put your smile on and GOD BLESS AMERICA!
