TROYS SONG OF THE DAY : Red River Valley by King ( as my Maria Puente likes to refer to him as) George Strait. The origins of the song are uncertain, though the tune & lyrics were collected by Carl Sandberg for 1927s American Songbag songbook; speculation is that the song was composed on or about 1870, during the Wolseley Expedition in the Canadian province to the northern Red River Valley. In August of 1925, the song was recorded for the 1st time by an early cowboy singer: Carl T. Sprague. It has since gone on to be used in many western movies including The Oxbow Incident & Tombstone. It has also been recorded by over 40 artists over the years, including : Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold,Johnny Cash, Ms. Suzy Bogguss,Roy Rogers, The Sons of the Pioneers, Ranger Doug & The Riders in the Sky, Tex Ritter, Marty Robbins, Gene Autry, both Arlo & Woody Guthrie, & Bill Hailey. A instrumental version entitled. Red River Rock was recorded by Johnny & the Hurricanes in 1959, & went on to be a huge rock/pop success!! This version recorded by Mr. Strait is off 1998s The Horse Whisperer soundtrack. And as always, George does a great job!!!
