TRUTH ABOUT HELA PROVINCE In recent times, and since the start of the PNGLNG Project, Many citizens of PNG have been putting up many posts on Facebook and many other social media outlets regarding the lack of development in Hela Province. As a proud citizen of Hela I am saddened and heartbroken that my people are portrayed very badly on all forms of media for PNG and the world to see. As a man on the ground currently in Hela. I am typing this under a lamp on my laptop and to be uploaded and posted on facebook using my phones hotspot from digicel data. Im sure many of us educated people living back in our home provinces do likewise. I will explain what is really going on in Hela and why people need to stop tarnishing my new provinces name. I have noticed that certain so called ‘educated’ elites of Hela have become Hypocrites and spoiled their own people on Facebook while in the comfort of their homes lying on their wifes/wives tighs and becoming facebook keyboard warriors. 1. LNG Money go where? People around PNG have this idea that just because Hela HOSTS the LNG Project that it would be flooded with money. However, it is not the case. Many keep forgetting that 99% of the EPC contractors engaged for the construction phase were overseas companies. All the money was paid to them for the work done in overseas transactions in AUS, US etc. People seem to think that the money was paid directly to Hela people or the Hela Provincial government. Hela, Like all other provinces in PNG, is dependent on the national government to fund its infrastructure programs. Even the work done by the LNG contractors were done in the project areas for the operator exxon mobil and not for public use. The first shipments have begun this year and Hela has not even received any funds belonging to the provincial government. 2. Why no Development The pace of development in Hela is slow because of its new status as province. It was just recent that Hela got its provincial infrastructure in place and started rolling out programs. People seem to think that development happens overnight! I challenge you all to prove to me that your home province is light years ahead of hela. Hela is part of PNG and as such it is stuck in the same predicament as all other provinces in PNG that is the slow development of services. Other provinces have been lucky that they had 40 years headstart ahead of hela and thus look at Hela as being underdeveloped. Give Hela 10-15 Years and hela will be laughing at PNG. 3. Resource Rich province Yes hela is a resource rich province hosting the PNGLNG, MOUNT KARE GOLD Mine, KUTUBU, GOBE, MORAN OIL FIELDS. However, Isnt the whole of PNG benefiting from Helas gas in the form of increased budget and DSIP grants to each and every district in PNG? And yet many citizens of PNG find it amusing to spoil Hela as being LNG Capital with no development and call hela ‘Pig brains’? Isn’t it ironical that Hela gives freely to PNG and yet we are made fun of and see as the laughing stock? People of PNG, Have some understanding and stop expecting Hela to change overnight! 4. Development takes time Hela is still consolidating its manpower and getting its house in Order. 2012 Election was the first that Hela had as a province and as such politically and economically Hela is still an infant province. People have to get it into their thick heads that Hela is a late starter 40 years after independence and that developing the huge province is going to take another 20 years to be up to the level of Hagen, Wabag, Goroka etc. Hela The Hela people are proud people and will one day be laughing at the whole of PNG. Do not underestimate my underdog province.
