Ten Years of Effort Culminate in Property Transfer We are pleased to announce the historic Amtrak train station on Main Street has been acquired by the Town of Windsor Locks. Countless public officials at the federal, state and local levels, interested residents of Windsor Locks and beyond, and Amtrak representatives have worked tirelessly over the last decade to make this transfer a reality. We thank all those who participated in this effort. First Selectman, Steve Wawruck, presented the deed to the Town Clerk yesterday for recording. We savor this momentous occasion as we set our sights on the building restoration. Crosskey Architects of Hartford is currently designing the restoration. The Town has benefitted from a Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) Grant that helped fund legal and engineering work leading up to the transfer, as well as the design of the station. The Town recently submitted a STEAP grant application to the Office of Policy and Management that, if awarded, would be utilized to secure the exterior of the building. Significant funds will be needed to bring the building back to life. The Town has established a designated fund to accept donations. The building will be a complementary feature to a new train platform that will be installed as part of the New Haven - Hartford - Springfield Commuter Rail Line. We expect the building to have multiple uses including a visitors center, art gallery, community meeting space and shared work space. An application to the Connecticut Main Street Centers Preservation of Place grant program is pending to conduct a use study.
