Tennessee Unemployment Rises Slightly in May Nashville- The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development recently released preliminary unemployment data for the month of May, and the average state unemployment rate is 6.4% -- a 0.1% uptick from April. This slight rise comes on the heels of several months of continuous and dramatic drops in both the state and national unemployment rate. In fact, over the past year, Tennessees unemployment rate has dropped two whole percentage points, from 8.4% to 6.4%. Tennessees economy added approximately 57,000 jobs in the past year, with the largest increases concentrated in professional / business services, leisure and hospitality, and transportation / utilities.
