Terrified British holidaymakers were plunged into darkness last night after their stricken cruise ship began to list off coast of Morocco following fire in engine room. Boudicca a Fred Olsen vessel became stranded at sea after fire broke out at 4 a.m. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said ship listed after loss of propulsion system and said the ship is now fully stable and there is no danger to guests or crew. Boudicca is currently on an 18-night cruise which departed Southampton, the ship is carrying 784 guests and 356 crew and had just departed Cadiz, Spain yesterday. In a statement released at 10:35am today, the ship’s UK-based owner, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, said the fire was extinguished, no injuries were reported and the vessel is sailing again with five engines running. Despite the disruption, the company said the ship is still aiming to arrive in Lanzarote tomorrow, although it is cruising at a slower speed. Seven hours after the fire a ship locator map on the companys website indicated that the Boudicca was travelling at 9.8 knots (11.2mph). Fred Olsen said: ‘The ship is currently under way, with three auxiliary engines running, and two main engines, and we are now reviewing the itinerary to get the ship back on schedule. ‘Following the loss of propulsion system, Boudicca listed for a short period, but is now fully stable, and there is no danger to guests or crew. ‘The safety of all guests and crew on board Boudicca is Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ utmost priority, the ship will liaise with the relevant maritime authorities, should any need emerge.
