Terry Frost: Todays TML Arts Artist Birthday Sir Terry Frost RA (born Terence Ernest Manitou Frost) (1915 – 2003) was an English abstract artist, who worked in Newlyn, Cornwall. Born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, in 1915, he did not become an artist until he was in his 30s. During his army service in World War II, he met and was taught by Adrian Heath while a prisoner of war, after being captured during the invasion of Crete in 1941. He decided that he wanted to become a painter at the end of the war, and attended Camberwell School of Art thanks to an ex-servicemans grant. He also attended the St Ives School of Art and in 1951 worked as an assistant to sculptor Barbara Hepworth. He taught at Bath Academy of Art and in Leeds, before becoming Artist in Residence at the Department of Fine Art, Reading University in 1965. He was later the universitys Professor of Painting. Frosts academic career included teaching at Bath Academy of Art, the Cyprus College of Art and the University of Leeds. Later he became Artist in Residence and Professor of Painting at the Department of Fine Art of the University of Reading. In 1992, he was elected a Royal Academician and he was knighted in 2000. He married Kathleen Clarke in 1945. They had five sons and one daughter. Two of his sons, Adrian and Anthony Frost and Luke, a grandson also became artists. Another, Stephen is a comedian and actor.
