Texas teenager Ethan Couch will not do jail time, despite killing four people and seriously injuring two others while driving drunk. His lawyers used the “affluenza” defense. They blamed his wealthy parents for spoiling him and setting no limits on his behavior, so he didn’t know it was wrong to drive drunk. The judge claims that played no part in her ruling, but she spared him jail time and just sentenced him to a rehab facility. Needless to say, the families of his victims strongly disagree with her sentence. I have to assume that his blaming of his parents for spoiling him doesn’t extend to their paying for his lawyers.
