Thank you Bette for speaking out against the proposed changes to the SUP. New Hanover County adopted a Special Use Permit (SUP) for industry in 2011. This zoning revision was the first improvement in almost 40 years. With pressure from business groups New Hanover County Planning Board and Staff will offer major revisions for the County Commissioners vote on June 2nd. The 2011 SUP was not perfect and might require minor clarifications but now is not the time for major revisions. The county has two major planning initiatives underway, County Comprehensive Plan and the Economic Targeting Strategy. These efforts will examine zoning for manufacturing including heavy industry. Naysayers would have us believe that the SUP has deterred manufacturers from locating in New Hanover County. The recent recession is a more valid reason for lagging industrial development. From my 25 years experience as an environmental manager for a Fortune 100 industry, SUPS are part of the procedures and cost of doing business. SUPs for intensive manufacturing are not a new concept nor are SUPs a big deal for industry. Just as a corporation will do due diligence on potential sites, the SUP is the procedure for New Hanover County to perform due diligence. Our county is small and densely populated. Future manufacturers should welcome the opportunity to introduce their business to our community. Elizabeth Bette Ingram Bauereis Wilmington, NC
