Thank you everybody who came for yesterdays meeting! Looks like what we lack in photos we earned in debating the idea of India as we see it, through books! It was wonderful to meet some new faces, DivyAnshu Tripathi who arrived before Shatabdi Singh (aka yours truly) and enthralled us with some of his favourite passages from Raag Darbari, definitely a BIG favourite amongst many members present- we will be taking it up as book of the month soon, Mohit Bhargava whos bombastic entry and absolutely bindass Im sorry but I think rebuttals were too much fun and gave us all the heebie jeebies, thank you Mohit for coming along and being the life of the party yesterday ;) as PC said, sabse patli kitaab aur.... haha..it was great to hear HLV Derozio again, thank you Ashutosh K Pandey for filling in our blanks about him and Gulbadan Begum, Monalisa Chaudhari thank you for reading from the Palace of Illusions, your idea of India through the thoughts of an Indian woman- none other than Panchali, Pramesh Agarwal did an excellent reading from Shataram just as Nitin Prakash had the enviable experience of doing the 6 hour Shantaram walk in Bomaby, being the darling he is, he called us on Dok Saabs phone from the 68th floor of a building in South Bombay overlooking the sea and told us why he thought Shantaram encapsulated his idea of India- he also said I love LBC (but didnt jump), Amit Ranjan Chitranshi chose a subject very close to some of our hearts- Baba Saheb Ambedkar as a lost hero/ignored architect of India, a passionate personal reading experience, he came all the way from Jaipur to be part of our meeting! (Ill believe you Amit bhai!!!) we will also be taking up Ambedkar and dalit literature in a future meet, Meenakshi Upadhyay Sharma added a very interesting and engaging account from the archives of the Allahabad High Court, little stories about and by her great grandfather, the very distinguished Pandit Upadhyaya ji, his exchanges with English Judges such a Bennett were hilarious! She has very kindly given us the pdf files of two such notes, one from his diaries and another called Law and Laughter by Gyanendra Pandey, both are highly recommended do look in our files section in the club, the other exciting sub discussion was between all the AL Basham fans and historians Sangita Jaiswal, Vineeta Kumari Shekhawat, Rashmi Shukla Bajpai and Nikhil Bajpai, it was such good fun to hear them rebut @mohit and also just talk about India-- we travelled through the Mahabharat, Ramanayan, the British idea of India, the Indian Constitution all in one breath really.. nobody was forgotten- Asura an excellent account from the perspective of Ravana was also present, thank you Pramesh, Sangita brought an interesting book on myths and legends of India along and one could only agree that its interesting to read these and take or leave them for what they are, Manoj Singh also brought the argumentative Indian and the Age of Kali and recommended Darlymples 9 lives, I didnt even come to know when he slipped away to his clinic :) Masto Baba as always brought it all together for us, his reading of Raag Darbari and his account of his own ideas of India/citizenship/patriotism as they developed beautifully at first by reading his mothers school diary with patriotic songs, then more serious books over the years were fascinating and deeply personal..Thank you @Prashant soni (why cant I tag you?) for being the admin par excellence that you are now and always :)
