Thank you to the Australian Family Association for this information and request for action against euthanasia. -------------------- ACT Greens call for repeal of the federal Territories (Euthanasia Laws) Act (the Andrew’s Bill) Greens ACT Minister, Shane Rattenbury and Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, have both urged the Senate Inquiry into Greens federal Senator, Richard Di Natale’s Medical Services (Dying with Dignity) Bill 2014, to push for repeal of the federal Territories (Euthanasia Laws) Act (the Andrews Bill) to allow territories to enact laws for euthanasia. Mr Rattenbury moved for the ACT Assembly to write to the Prime Minister to support repealing the Andrews Bill to allow the territories to make euthanasia laws. The motion passed with the support of Labor but Liberals voted against it. Liberal leader, Jeremy Hanson, said it is just a Greens agenda to introduce euthanasia into the territory and while he is very sympathetic to people who are suffering he does not support euthanasia. Labor backbencher, Mary Porter, has also been advocating euthanasia and last year made a three week visit to Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium to meet euthanasia experts and look at the systems in those countries. She is holding a second community forum on the issue in October and is finalising a research paper The ACT is a very small jurisdiction (approximately 383,000 population, comparable in size to a local council), with a legislature of only 17 members and no upper house of review so there are few checks and balances. It is therefore not appropriate that the ACT should be seeking to determine such controversial social policy that would impact the rest of Australia.
