Thanks Zubair Torwali feedback may be shared at stcgonwfp@gmail SKYC—Swat-Kohistan Youth Center Concept: Swat-Kohistan is the culturally diverse and idyllic upper Swat valley comprising the sub-valleys of Bahrain, Chail, Madyan, Kalam, Ushu and Utror. It is the least developed part in the Swat district. Ethnically the whole area has seven distinct ethnic groups namely Torwali, Gawri, Gujri, Pashtun, Ushojo, Qshqari and Badeshi. It has a population of over 350,000 people. The area has an average female literacy rate below 2 percent while in male it is hardly 12 percent. The entire area is now under administratively a sub-division with Bahrain as headquarters formerly two tehsils Bahrain and Kalam. The entire area is famous for tourism and each year thousands of tourists—now mostly domestic—come to solace here. One of the area’s town Kalam hosts the Swat Summer Festival by Gove of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan Army each year. Objectives of SKYC Organize and mobilize the youth for social activism and healthy activities Career counselling of the youth and students Hold cultural and recreational activities for the youth and help de-radicalize the youth Promote ethnic harmony and social cohesion Prepare youth as tour operators Train youth for the revival of local indigenous means of livelihood Sensitize youth on environment and climate change hazards Mobilize youth in times of disasters Mobilize youth for voluntary social welfare work Network the youth with national and international youth bodies Proposed activities Workshops Cultural events Walks Establishment of teaching and tuition facilities Holding of cultural festivals Cross cultural visits and exchange programmes Training and career counselling Talks and dialogues on local cable networks Youth dialogues with political and community leaders Youth interaction with government functionaries Tourist information centers Provide tourist guides Training of youth in hotel management Games—local and the popular Socio-economic surveys of the area by the youth Implementation The local indigenous organization Idara Baraye Taleem-o-Taarqi (IBT) will be partner with the KP government in management of the Swat-Kohistan Youth Center. IBT has been working in the area since 2007 for an integrated and sustainable development. IBT has so far mobilized a greater number of youth for healthy activism. In 2011 IBT held a 03-day Indigenous Cultural Festival ‘Simam’ with the financial support of Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa In 2011 IBT conducted an Annual Status of Education Report survey of the entire district of Swat In 2010, 2011 and 2012 IBT organized the locals under grand jirgas for the solution of the problems the area face In Swat Summer Festival 2013 IBT participated and presented the local culture viz music, traditional dances, songs, cultural stalls, local cuisines and information centers on the languages, people and culture of the area. Currently IBT is implementing a number of projects including Swat-Kohistan Women Education Project; Mother tongue based multilingual education project; formation and capacity building of Community organizations; campaign for the conservation of forests and rivers etc. Budget Budget for the setting up of the Swat-Kohistan Youth Center will be discussed after negotiation with the Sarhad Tourism Corporation (TCKP) when the pros and cons of the initiative by the government side is clarified.
