[Thanks to Comcast too-high speed services] some articles are not showing up, so here is the second half of Vermont Diary from yesterday on the impact of the news] Above the fold we got to read 500 words about a rabid racoon which was shot, and killed too, says the article, and then no more about the raccoon. The lead in this paper is given up to a new elderly home which has an open house in 2 weeks which the speaker hoped investors and others would show up for. This paper is something to do with the Brattleboro Reformer and stuffed with glossy advertising by boxy stores such as Hannafords and the Market Basket in Biddeford Maine giving us 20 square feet of advertizing and incentive to go there and get Land O Lakes American Cheese for just $2.99 a pound and we usually convey these materials from front door to back door recycling bin unread. Glad I didn’t miss this one. Rite Aid also had a glossy insert leading with their low prices for Halloween chocs which we can give already hyped up kids, and for only as much as ten to fifteen bucks a pound seemed average. Meanwhile The Commons provided their largest article to the Rockingham Library Story, and talk about burying the lead, I never found one, except the ex-librarian is suing or thinking of suing the library but would drop the suit if reinstated and the head honchos of the library are a bit scarce with coming up for reasons for her dismissal. A refreshingly hilarious note was from a new board member who declared that she was unbiased in the affair, with the unfortunate implication that the previous board is. To round it off NPR told us everything we were already feeling about national government and its efficacy, while asking us to feel sorry for government employees who were furloughed while being paid for this extra holiday, and they might have to wait for other government employees to catch up with them with their paychecks, and the poor folks are already feeling that February could bring the same scene around again. If you don’t have to fill print space to order every day or every week you can at least counsel and support your own columnists to wait until they have something to say that is worth the reading. Evidently this is a most neglected factor in the Information Age and I am glad I and they resist it. Some things are not urgent nor this week’s news, but are important all the time.
