The 22 year old man, from Fuzhou in the Fujian province in China, suffered severe nasal trauma in a serious car accident in August 2012, and his nose became infected and deformed. The infection corroded his nasal cartilage, making nasal reconstruction impossible. Surgeons had the idea to grow a new nose for the man, by putting a skin tissue expander onto his forehead, cutting it into the shape of a nose and planting cartilage taken from his ribs.
